Otse, reacting to the police invitation in a video shared on Instagram on Thursday, said he was willing to honour the invitation but would only present his evidence in court. The police had invited him to substantiate his claim that some officers at checkpoints allegedly identify wealthy travellers and pass their information to kidnappers for possible abduction.

I’m not going to be giving the police my evidence. Why would I do that? I would be charged in court, and I would turn down the evidence in court,” Otse said, adding that his lawyers were ready to represent him.

The activist also stood by his broader allegations against security agencies, accusing elements within the police, military, immigration and customs services of contributing to the persistence of insecurity in the country. He questioned the huge resources allocated to security while kidnapping, banditry and terrorism continue to threaten Nigerians.

However, Otse acknowledged the difficult working conditions faced by many police officers and called for improved welfare. “If you want Nigeria’s security to be tightened, you have to take care of our policemen. Take care of them,” he said.

The police had described Otse’s allegations as serious and unsubstantiated, while maintaining that it was prepared to investigate any credible evidence presented by the activist.
