European football nations are reportedly set to abandon their threat to boycott FIFA competitions after receiving assurances from world football governing body FIFA, bringing an immediate end to the standoff between UEFA and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

UEFA had threatened to withdraw European teams from FIFA competitions over concerns about Infantino’s proposal to sell shares in a commercial venture linked to the World Cup to private investors. Although Infantino later withdrew the proposal, European officials demanded guarantees that similar attempts to alter the structure of international football would not be repeated.

According to Sky News, the assurances have now been provided and are expected to be discussed at meetings in Monaco on Thursday. The development means England and other European nations are expected to participate in the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland as scheduled, effectively ending the immediate threat of a European boycott.

The dispute had developed into one of the biggest political challenges of Infantino’s FIFA presidency, with UEFA leading opposition to his leadership. Reports also indicated that some FIFA vice presidents from Asia, Europe and North America had supported the challenge.

The Under-20 Women’s World Cup will provide Infantino with an opportunity to make a public appearance as FIFA president amid the continuing divisions within the organisation. The next senior FIFA tournament will be the 2027 Women’s World Cup, scheduled for June next year, after the FIFA presidential election in March.

Infantino has yet to publicly confirm whether he will seek another term. Potential candidates have until November to secure the backing of at least five football associations to enter the presidential race.
