Twelve people died as they boarded a bus in Abuja headed for Benin, Edo State, according to the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).
According to news sources, Cyril Matthew, the Sector Commander of the FRSC in Edo State, stated that the driver was having trouble sleeping due to exhaustion, but the crash could have been prevented.

Speaking in Benin on Sunday, Matthew described how a Toyota Hiace bus and a truck were involved in the Saturday accident, which happened at around five in the morning in the Igueoviobo hamlet, close to an army checkpoint along the Benin-Ekpoma-Auchi Expressway.

He claims that the vehicle’s manifest was used to identify the 12 occupants. The truck driver and his helper were unharmed, he said.

Around five in the morning, the bus left Zuba in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, and made its way to Benin City when it struck an approaching vehicle while traveling through Auchi.

“The bus was engulfed in flames, making it impossible to save the victims, and all of the passengers perished in the vehicle accident, which may have been brought on by exhaustion. The driver may have fallen asleep, causing the collision.

The driver of the truck and his helper, affectionately known as “Motor Boy,” made it out unscathed. The vehicle’s manifest allowed FRSC officials to identify the bodies. Since then, we’ve spoken with their families,” he said.

“After driving for four hours and when they felt tired, to avoid unnecessary and preventable loss of lives of mostly innocent persons,” he said, urging drivers to minimize weariness and emphasize rest during long journeys.
