The Presidential Working Group on the State Police Bill has extended the deadline for the submission of memoranda and position papers on the proposed National Policing Bill to Friday, August 21, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. The extension, announced by the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu and Chairman of the Working Group, Femi Gbajabiamila, is aimed at giving stakeholders more time to contribute to the ongoing reform of Nigeria’s policing framework.

Gbajabiamila said the decision reflects the Working Group’s commitment to broad-based consultations and ensuring that submissions are comprehensive and technically sound. He urged legal practitioners, civil society organisations, security experts, academics, state governments, professional bodies and members of the public to submit their contributions through the official National Policing Bill portal.

Key areas for consideration include funding, command structure, recruitment and training, operational jurisdiction, inter-agency cooperation, accountability and safeguards against political interference.

The proposed legislation forms part of broader efforts to establish state police through constitutional amendments. The Presidency has maintained that the National Assembly must conclude the constitutional amendment process before state police can be formally created. The Working Group is expected to submit an implementation-ready draft of the National Policing Bill to President Bola Tinubu by September 3, 2026, after reviewing all stakeholder submissions.
