The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Hussaini Yusuf Datti, has been declared the winner of the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency bye-election in Kano State.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced Datti as the winner after Saturday’s election, which was conducted to fill the vacant seat in the Kano State House of Assembly. INEC’s results system confirms that the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency bye-election was held on September 19, 2026.

According to the announced results reported by multiple Nigerian news outlets, Datti secured 22,890 votes to emerge ahead of the other candidates who contested the election.

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) was reported to have received 270 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) recorded 180 votes. The Action Peoples Party (APP) polled 53 votes, while the Labour Party (LP) secured 39 votes.

The result gives the APC the seat previously occupied by Shuaibu Rabiu Nagoggo, popularly known as Abba Gano, whose move to the House of Representatives created the vacancy.

Datti’s victory followed a chain of events triggered by the death of Alhaji Muhammad Hassan, who represented the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

Hassan died in Abuja on April 10, 2026, after a period of illness. His death created a vacancy in the federal constituency and led to a separate House of Representatives bye-election.

Nagoggo, who had been representing Dawakin Kudu in the Kano State House of Assembly, subsequently contested the federal constituency election and won, leaving his former state assembly seat vacant.

The latest election was therefore conducted specifically to replace Nagoggo in the Kano State House of Assembly.

INEC had listed the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency bye-election among the legislative elections conducted on September 19, with the commission’s results portal showing full result-sheet uploads for the constituency.

Election Result and Political Transition

The reported vote figures show a substantial difference between Datti and the other candidates in the contest. The APC candidate’s 22,890 votes placed him ahead of the PRP, PDP, APP and Labour Party candidates.

Vanguard independently reported the same 22,890 votes for Datti and confirmed the other reported party totals, including 270 for PRP, 180 for PDP, 53 for APP and 39 for LP.

The result marks the conclusion of the process to fill the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency vacancy created by Nagoggo’s election to the National Assembly.

The development also comes months after the federal constituency experienced its own electoral transition following Hassan’s death and the subsequent election won by Nagoggo.

With Datti declared winner, the APC candidate is set to take over representation of Dawakin Kudu in the Kano State House of Assembly, subject to the completion of the applicable electoral and legislative procedures.

The latest result adds another development to Kano State’s series of legislative changes in 2026, following the death of a federal lawmaker, a subsequent federal constituency bye-election and now the filling of the resulting state assembly vacancy.
