The Katsina State Government has defended its decision to suspend school operations during the sacred month of Ramadan, emphasizing that necessary measures have been taken to ensure minimal disruption to students’ education. The decision, according to officials, considers both religious obligations and the harsh weather conditions in northern Nigeria.

In a statement released on Tuesday by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education’s Public Relations Officer, Sani Danjuma, the government explained that the suspension aligns academic schedules with religious practices while maintaining educational progress.

“The government has developed a strategy to minimize academic disruption while recognizing the challenges posed by Ramadan,” the statement noted. This announcement comes amid ongoing discussions regarding the impact of school closures on students’ learning progress.

Additional Classes Arranged for Examination Candidates

To compensate for lost academic time, the Katsina State Government has arranged special additional classes for Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) candidates across public, private, and community schools. These supplementary lessons aim to support students preparing for their final exams and ensure they do not fall behind.

“Our directive ensures that students, particularly those preparing for critical examinations, continue their academic preparations,” Danjuma stated. He assured the public that the extra lessons, set to commence on March 3, 2025, would be structured to accommodate both students and teachers observing Ramadan.

School Closures During Ramadan Backed by State Law

The government also reminded the public that the suspension of academic activities during Ramadan is not a new development but is backed by an existing state law. This regulation has been in place to allow students and teachers to focus on their religious obligations while also addressing challenges posed by extreme weather conditions.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education acknowledged concerns raised by various stakeholders, including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). In response, officials reassured the public that the new academic schedule would be flexible and considerate of students’ religious commitments and environmental factors.
