The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has accused the federal government of placing excessive economic burdens on Nigerians, ignoring their welfare and survival. Ajaero criticized the government for prioritizing corporate interests over the well-being of citizens, warning that organized labour would no longer remain silent in the face of economic hardship and social injustice.

Ajaero made these remarks on Friday at the 6th Quadrennial Delegates Conference of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) in Lagos, where he condemned the government’s policies, particularly unjust taxation, tariff hikes, and failure to honor agreements with workers.

Ajaero: “We Must Resist Tyranny and Economic Oppression”

During his speech, Ajaero declared that Nigerians and the labour movement must resist government oppression, which he described as a betrayal of the social contract between the people and the government.

“We must resist the attempt to tax the Nigerian people to death,” he stated firmly.

Ajaero expressed outrage over the government’s failure to implement an appropriate minimum wage and the arbitrary reduction of salaries for federal civil servants, describing these actions as not only unjust but an outright disregard for the struggles of Nigerian workers.

“At a time when the minimum wage is not being implemented properly, and federal civil servants are having their salaries arbitrarily reduced, we cannot remain silent. These actions are not just unjust; they are a betrayal of the social contract between the government and the people,” he declared.

The NLC leader further accused the government of imposing harsh economic measures on already struggling Nigerians, including:

  • Excessive taxation that disproportionately affects low-income earners.
  • Tariff hikes on essential services, increasing the cost of living.
  • Failure to fulfill agreements with labour unions, leading to worsening working conditions.

NLC to Resist Economic Dictatorship

The organized labour movement, Ajaero stressed, would not tolerate dictatorship or economic oppression. He urged political officeholders to prioritize the needs of the people over corporate interests.

“We must resist the concentration of power in the hands of a few and the systematic subversion of constitutional order,” he said.

Ajaero warned that continued neglect of workers’ rights and economic justice could lead to mass resistance from Nigerian workers. He called on all workers to remain vigilant and united, promising that the NLC would intensify efforts to push back against policies that undermine their welfare.

“Our struggle is not just about the maritime sector or the MWUN alone. It is a struggle for the soul of Nigeria – a struggle to build a nation where the rights of workers are respected, where labour is justly rewarded, and where the welfare of every citizen is prioritised,” he emphasized.

The labour leader made it clear that the NLC would continue to engage in protests, negotiations, and legal battles against policies that threaten the livelihoods of Nigerian workers.

Commendation for MWUN Leadership and Call for Stronger Labour Movement

While addressing the gathering, Ajaero commended the outgoing leadership of MWUN under Adewale Adeyanju for its dedication to improving workers’ welfare. He acknowledged their contributions to the labour movement and urged the incoming leadership to continue the struggle for fair wages, decent working conditions, and a stronger labour force.

“The new leadership must surpass the achievements of the past,” he said.

He charged them to take the union to greater heights, ensuring that workers ultimately win in their fight for fair treatment.

Rising Economic Hardship and Labour’s Growing Resistance

The economic hardship in Nigeria has continued to worsen, with inflation, job losses, and high living costs putting immense pressure on citizens. Many Nigerians have criticized the government for failing to address the economic crisis, while workers struggle with low wages, delayed salaries, and job insecurity.

The NLC has been at the forefront of resisting government policies that negatively impact workers, including:

  • Protests against fuel subsidy removal, which led to a sharp increase in the cost of transportation and goods.
  • Strikes over minimum wage non-implementation, demanding better wages for workers.
  • Opposition to electricity tariff hikes, which have made basic utilities unaffordable for many.

With Joe Ajaero’s latest warning, it is clear that the labour movement is prepared to intensify its fight against what it describes as economic oppression and government insensitivity.

Conclusion

The NLC President’s strong remarks at the MWUN conference reflect the growing frustration among Nigerian workers over the government’s economic policies. Ajaero’s call for resistance against taxation, wage cuts, and economic hardship signals an impending showdown between the labour movement and the government.

As the economic situation in Nigeria remains dire, the government will have to either engage labour unions in meaningful dialogue or face increasing resistance from the working class. The coming months will likely see more protests and demands for urgent economic reforms to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.
