Reps ask NCC to block ALL pornographic websites
The House of Representatives has instructed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to mandate internet service providers to block access to websites hosting obscene and pornographic content with immediate effect.
This decision was reached on Tuesday following a motion presented by Dalhatu Tafoki, a lawmaker from Katsina State representing the All Progressives Congress (APC).
While presenting the motion, Tafoki expressed concern over the growing issue of cyber pornography, stating that Nigeria had not taken sufficient measures to combat it.
He emphasized that Nigeria is a “highly religious country” where major faiths oppose nudity and obscenity.
Tafoki also pointed out that several countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have enacted laws prohibiting pornography. He referenced warnings from psychologists and sociologists regarding its negative effects, including its potential to promote adultery, prostitution, and addiction.
“Renowned psychologists and sociologists around the world have issued stern warnings on the psychological, sociological, and mental consequences of viewing pornographic content,” he stated.
When the motion was put to a voice vote by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, lawmakers overwhelmingly supported it.
As a result, the House directed the NCC to impose penalties on service providers that fail to comply with the directive.
