In a dramatic turn of events that has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s entertainment and legal circles, Paul Okoye, popularly known as Rudeboy of the iconic music duo Psquare, took to social media on Tuesday to celebrate the release of his elder brother, Jude Okoye, from detention. Jude was freed just a day before his 48th birthday after spending nearly two months behind bars on serious charges.

His release comes at a time when the music executive and founder of Northside Music Ltd faces mounting legal troubles involving allegations of money laundering, financial mismanagement, and internal family disputes that have further complicated his public image.

Jail, Jubilation, and the Jude Okoye Controversy

Jude Okoye’s arrest in February 2025 by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) followed explosive charges alleging the laundering of ₦1.38 billion, $1 million, and £34,537.59. The EFCC accused Jude and his music company of engaging in suspicious financial operations between 2016 and 2023, including property acquisitions and foreign currency conversions that raised red flags.

For weeks, his legal team faced frustrating delays and setbacks in securing bail, resulting in his extended detention at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre. However, on April 23, he finally regained his freedom, prompting Rudeboy to post a heartfelt message on Instagram:

“Jude is finally out after 2 months… all their efforts to frustrate his bail have finally collapsed. Welcome home, brother @judeengees! And happy birthday!”

Jude’s release does not mark the end of his legal woes. Court documents reveal that the EFCC’s case against him remains active, with hearings expected to resume in the coming weeks. Moreover, the case took a deeply personal turn when Peter Okoye—also known as Mr. P, the other half of Psquare—submitted a petition alleging that Jude diverted millions in music royalties and created a separate entity without informing or involving him.

The tension among the Okoye brothers is not new, but this latest development has reignited public interest in their fractured relationship. Many fans and observers recall that internal family disputes were a major factor in the 2017 split of Psquare, once one of Africa’s most successful music groups.

As public opinion sways between support and skepticism, Jude’s legal situation highlights the broader issues plaguing Nigeria’s entertainment industry: allegations of mismanagement, lack of transparency, and the fine line between personal and professional relationships.

For now, Jude Okoye is a free man—but with investigations ongoing and family feuds resurfacing, the battle for his reputation and legal vindication is far from over.
