The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a ₦10 billion housing loan scheme aimed at expanding homeownership opportunities for civil servants across Nigeria. The initiative marks a significant step in the government’s broader effort to enhance worker welfare and strengthen public service efficiency.

The announcement was made in Abuja by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, during a press briefing on Friday. She explained that the scheme will be implemented through the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria and the Federal Government Staff Housing Loans Board.

According to Walson-Jack, the initiative is designed to provide accessible financing options that will enable civil servants to own homes, thereby improving their quality of life and job performance.

Describing the policy as more than a welfare intervention, Walson-Jack emphasized that the housing loan scheme reflects the administration’s governance philosophy. She noted that stable housing plays a critical role in boosting morale, focus, and productivity among workers.

“There is a saying that a person who owns their own home stands differently,” she stated, highlighting the psychological and economic benefits tied to homeownership. She added that when civil servants feel secure about their living conditions, they are more likely to contribute effectively to national development.

Beyond housing, the Head of Service outlined ongoing reforms aimed at modernizing Nigeria’s civil service. These include transitioning to a digital, paperless system designed to improve efficiency, transparency, and accountability across government institutions.

She reiterated her commitment to ensuring that civil servants not only earn better but also grow professionally, with access to the tools and institutional support needed to reach their full potential.

Walson-Jack also credited the success of recent reforms to collaboration among key government bodies. Institutions such as the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Budget Office, and the Office of the Accountant General were highlighted as contributors to the progress recorded so far.

According to her, this coordinated approach reflects a shift away from isolated operations toward a unified system where ministries, departments, and agencies work together toward shared national goals.

She urged all government institutions to sustain this collaborative momentum, extending it beyond welfare initiatives into policy implementation and service delivery.

Looking ahead, Walson-Jack noted that the upcoming Workers’ Day celebration will carry special significance this year. She explained that civil servants can now point to tangible evidence that their efforts are being recognized and rewarded.

“Workers’ Day is not just about remembering the struggles of the past; it is about renewing the promise for the future,” she said, stressing the importance of fairness, justice, and appreciation for those serving the nation.

In closing, she commended civil servants for their resilience and dedication, acknowledging the sacrifices they have made under challenging conditions. She described the current moment as one of recognition and renewed purpose for Nigeria’s workforce.

As the housing scheme rolls out, it is expected to play a key role in improving living standards while reinforcing the government’s commitment to building a more motivated and effective civil service.
