Ridwanullah Jamiu, the Chief Imam of Lagos’ Lekki Central Mosque, has stated that the “Jesus Christ is Not God” banner that was erected on the mosque’s gate was not meant to incite anyone. After a photo of the sign was posted on social media, it sparked debate, with many people accusing it of being an assault on Christianity. Speaking to his audience, Jamiu explained that the flag was there to inform Muslims. “You should learn something when you visit Lekki Central Mosque,” he remarked. Islam values knowledge, therefore as you go past the banners outside and glance around, you pick up some wisdom. All of the banners outside the mosque, according to the Imam, have verses from the Quran and Hadith. After a picture, he stated

He stated that the banners were not meant to incite anyone, pointing out that provocation and the spread of Islam are two different things. Just yesterday, it wasn’t put there. It has remained there for around two months. We are peaceful individuals who avoid provoking others. All we do is spread our name,” he stated. Jamiu added that no one can monopolize Jesus because Muslims also hold certain beliefs about him, which are supported by the Quran, which refers to him as Isah.

“You are not a Muslim if you do not believe in Jesus. As Muslims, everything we hold to be true must be consistent with the Quran, which states that Jesus Christ is a messenger of God rather than God himself. This verse was cited in the flag. Is it improper for us to post our beliefs on our property in order to inform our congregation? It is a Quranic verse. “This is freedom of speech and freedom of religion,” he declared. Jamiu claimed that when the flag was taken down, he got several calls accusing him of being cowardly.

Cowardice is not what it is. We withdrew it to allow peace to reign and to comply with our government because we value peace and because we are aware that it is a holiday, which may lead some to believe it was done intentionally to incite anger. We’ll make the necessary changes and replace it. He declared, “We are not cowards.” Since then, a new banner that reads, “Allah is the lord of Jesus,” has taken its place.
