Ibrahim Gusau has confirmed his resignation as President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), bringing his tenure at the helm of Nigerian football to an end amid mounting pressure over the state of the country’s football administration.

Gusau confirmed his resignation at a press conference on Thursday afternoon, following intense criticism of the NFF after a series of setbacks involving Nigeria’s national teams. The development comes shortly after reports that several members of the NFF executive committee had also resigned.

The NFF leadership has faced increased scrutiny following the failure of the Super Eagles to qualify for consecutive FIFA World Cups and the historic failure of the Super Falcons to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Falcons’ 1–0 defeat to Cameroon in the 2026 WAFCON quarter-finals ended their title defence and forced them into a playoff route for World Cup qualification.

The resignation also comes amid investigations by security and anti-corruption agencies into the management of a ₦17 billion Federal Government intervention fund approved in 2024 to clear outstanding salaries, allowances and bonuses owed to Nigeria’s national teams. The NFF has reportedly come under scrutiny from the EFCC and DSS over the handling of the funds.

Gusau’s resignation is expected to further shake up the leadership of Nigerian football, with attention now turning to the next steps for the NFF and the scheduled election of a new board.
