Social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has challenged the Nigeria Police Force to charge him to court if it wants him to provide evidence backing his allegations that some security personnel are aiding kidnappers and bandits.

Otse made the position known on Thursday while reacting to the police invitation over his claim that some officers allegedly identify wealthy travellers at checkpoints and pass their information to kidnappers. He said he would honour the invitation but would not surrender his evidence to the police, insisting that he would present it before a court if formally charged.

“I’m not going to be giving the police my evidence. Why would I do that? I would be charged in court, and I would turn down the evidence in court.” Otse said, adding that his lawyers were ready to represent him.

The activist also maintained his allegations against elements within the police, military, immigration and customs services, arguing that institutional failures and alleged misconduct were contributing to Nigeria’s worsening insecurity. However, he acknowledged the difficult conditions faced by police officers and called on the Federal Government to improve their welfare.

“If you want Nigeria’s security to be tightened, you have to take care of our policemen. Take care of them,” he said.

The Nigeria Police Force had described the allegations as serious and unsubstantiated, while inviting Otse to provide evidence that could assist an investigation.
