President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accompanied by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, is set to depart Abuja on Tuesday, March 17, for a landmark State Visit to the United Kingdom. The visit comes at the invitation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, marking a significant moment in diplomatic relations between both nations.

According to a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the Nigerian leader will be hosted at the historic Windsor Castle from March 18 to March 19. This visit represents the first State Visit by a Nigerian leader to the UK in 37 years and the first time a Nigerian President will be formally received by a British monarch at Windsor Castle.

Nigeria and the United Kingdom share longstanding diplomatic, cultural, and economic ties rooted in history. The upcoming engagement is expected to further deepen these relations while opening new pathways for cooperation in critical sectors.

During the visit, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the First Lady will participate in a series of high-level engagements hosted by the British Royal Family. A key highlight includes a special exhibition of Nigerian-related artefacts from the Royal Collection, reflecting the shared heritage between both nations.

The itinerary also features private discussions between the Nigerian President and King Charles III, alongside meetings with organisations promoting interfaith dialogue at national and international levels. In the evening, a State Banquet will be held in honour of the Nigerian delegation.

A major diplomatic engagement will take place at 10 Downing Street, where President Tinubu will hold bilateral talks with Keir Starmer. The meeting is expected to strengthen bilateral cooperation and lead to expanded engagements between senior officials of both countries.

Key outcomes of the discussions will include the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding covering trade, investment, defence, and cultural collaboration. One of the most notable agreements is a £746 million financing deal involving the UK Export Finance, the Nigerian Ports Authority, and Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Finance.

The financing package will support the refurbishment of two major maritime hubs: the Lagos Port Complex (Apapa Quays) and the Tin Can Island Port Complex. These upgrades are expected to boost Nigeria’s trade capacity and enhance port efficiency.

In addition to official meetings, President Tinubu will attend the Nigerian Modernism exhibition, highlighting contemporary Nigerian art and culture. He is also scheduled to meet with British and Nigerian business leaders, as well as members of the diaspora community, to promote investment opportunities and economic collaboration.

The President’s entourage includes top government officials such as Senate President Godswill Akpabio and several ministers, including Lateef Fagbemi, Dele Alake, Wale Edun, and Bosun Tijani.

Others in the delegation are National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency Mohammed Mohammed, among other senior officials.

The State Visit underscores Nigeria’s renewed diplomatic push to strengthen global partnerships and attract foreign investment. President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria at the conclusion of the engagements.
