The operation demonstrated the airline’s capacity to handle complex and specialised cargo requiring detailed planning, strict safety procedures and compliance with international animal welfare requirements. The lions began their journey in Johannesburg under the supervision of wildlife conservation specialists, with dedicated procedures covering documentation, preparation, containment and monitoring throughout the trip. TAAG said the measures were designed to safeguard the animals while meeting applicable requirements for the international transportation of live animals.

The use of Luanda as a transit point also highlighted the role of Dr António Agostinho Neto International Airport’s Cargo Terminal in supporting specialised regional logistics. According to TAAG, the operation further demonstrates the airport’s potential as a strategic cargo gateway connecting Southern, Central and West Africa. The lions were transported aboard TAAG’s Boeing 737-800 Freighter, which the airline uses for general freight, special cargo, high-value goods, perishables, industrial equipment and live animals.
The lions’ final destination is a zoological facility in Lagos, where they are expected to be kept in a secure and controlled environment with access to specialised veterinary care, experienced big-cat handlers and purpose-built facilities. TAAG said the successful operation further reflects the versatility of its cargo services and its expanding African network, which currently includes dedicated services to Lagos, Brazzaville, Abidjan, Accra, Kinshasa, Nairobi, Johannesburg and Lusaka.
