The incident occurred around 4 p.m., and authorities, including the Lagos State Marine Police and officers from the Sabo Police Division, immediately responded to the emergency. Efforts to Save the Victim Prove Unsuccessful

According to Hundeyin, despite the marine police’s rapid intervention, they were unable to save the woman’s life. She was retrieved from the UNILAG shore slipway but was already lifeless.

“Today, March 13, 2025, at about 1600 hours, an unidentified woman reportedly jumped from the Third Mainland Bridge into the water near the UNILAG waterfront at approximately 1500 hours.

She was recovered at the University of Lagos shore slipway by a team of marine police officers stationed in the area. Despite their efforts, she was confirmed dead by a team of UNILAG medical doctors in the presence of officers from the Sabo Police Division,” Hundeyin stated.

Following the confirmation of her death, authorities transported her body to the IDH Mortuary in Yaba for preservation as investigations into her identity and circumstances surrounding the incident continue.

Growing Concerns Over Suicide Cases in Lagos

This unfortunate event adds to the growing concerns about the increasing number of suicide cases in Lagos, particularly involving individuals jumping off bridges into the lagoon. Over the past few years, several similar cases have been reported, raising questions about mental health awareness and support systems in the city.

Authorities have urged residents to be more vigilant and report any signs of distress among their loved ones. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government and other relevant agencies continue to explore measures to curb such incidents, including installing more surveillance cameras and emergency barriers on major bridges.

For now, the identity of the deceased woman remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing.
