The United States military has announced an increase in arms supply and intelligence sharing with Nigeria as part of broader efforts to counter Islamic State-linked militant groups operating in the region.
The Deputy Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), Lt.-Gen. John Brennan, disclosed this in an interview with Agence France-Presse (AFP) on the sidelines of a US–Nigeria security meeting held in Abuja last week.

Brennan said the enhanced cooperation is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to confront terrorist threats, particularly those affiliated with the Islamic State operating across parts of the Sahel and Lake Chad region.
According to him, the US is focused on providing targeted military equipment, advanced intelligence support, and operational collaboration to enable Nigerian security forces to respond more effectively to evolving security challenges.
He added that the partnership reflects Washington’s commitment to supporting African nations in addressing terrorism, while also promoting regional stability and safeguarding civilian populations.
The Nigerian government has repeatedly welcomed international cooperation in its ongoing fight against insurgency, banditry, and transnational terrorism.
