Oyo State Governor Hints at Political Transition Ahead of 2027 Elections
As political activities begin to intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has announced that he will unveil his preferred successor in January 2026. The governor made this disclosure on Monday during the 11th Omituntun Ramadan Lecture held at the Government House Arcade in Ibadan.
The event, themed “Benefits of Being a Good Neighbour: An Islamic Perspective,” was attended by key religious and political figures, including the Grand Chief Imam of Ogbomoland, Yunus Olushina Teliat, and former Governor Rashidi Ladoja.
Makinde Seeks Continued Support and Prayers
During his speech, Makinde, who spoke largely in Yoruba, expressed gratitude to the Muslim community for their unwavering support of his administration. He urged religious leaders to continue praying for the success of his government and the overall development of Oyo State.
“I am grateful for the support I have received so far, but I still need your prayers as we continue working for the development of our state,” he stated.
Makinde also acknowledged that political activities would soon begin to take shape as his tenure gradually winds down. However, he emphasized that his administration remains focused on delivering governance and is not yet in a transition phase.
“I am not yet a lame duck. I know some people are already preparing for their next moves, but we still have work to do,” he said.
Governor’s Endorsement Expected to Influence 2027 Race
One of the most intriguing moments of the event came when Makinde addressed a popular Ibadan socialite, Abbas Oloko. In a lighthearted remark, he urged Oloko not to remove his billboard at the Isale Alfa area, hinting that it would soon feature the image of his chosen candidate.
“In January 2026, we know that political activities will begin. By then, I will tell you the person whose picture will be placed there,” he said, subtly indicating that his endorsement would be a major factor in the upcoming elections.
Having served as governor since 2019, Makinde’s influence in Oyo politics remains significant. While he has yet to signal any preference regarding his successor, his endorsement is expected to shape the political landscape leading up to the 2027 gubernatorial race.
As political stakeholders await his decision, the coming months will likely witness increased political maneuvering among aspirants hoping to secure Makinde’s backing.
