Under the revised limits, presidential candidates can now spend up to ₦10 billion, up from the previous ₦5 billion. Governorship candidates’ spending cap was raised from ₦1 billion to ₦3 billion, while senatorial candidates can now spend ₦500 million, an increase from ₦100 million.
For the House of Representatives, the ceiling rose from ₦70 million to ₦250 million, and for State House of Assembly candidates, from ₦30 million to ₦100 million. The same ₦100 million cap now applies to Local Government chairmanship candidates, up from ₦30 million.
Councillorship candidates also saw an increase, with the spending limit doubled from ₦5 million to ₦10 million.
Additionally, the amendment stipulates that no individual or entity may donate more than ₦500 million to any single candidate, regardless of the office being contested.
The changes are aimed at updating Nigeria’s electoral framework to reflect current economic realities, though they have already sparked debate among stakeholders over campaign financing, equity, and the cost of politics ahead of future elections.
