Force spokesman, Ani Iniedu, said police personnel deployed for the election had remained in the state while anti-riot officers were positioned at identified flashpoints and major junctions.
“The officers who came for the election are still on the ground. We have deployed anti-riot police officers to flashpoints and junctions across a few states,” Iniedu said.
He added that undercover operatives had also been deployed to gather intelligence and monitor developments across the state.
“We have undercover agents moving from one point to the other, flipping out the intelligence and informing the police,” he stated.
The Force spokesman said the police had placed the state on heightened security alert, with senior officers directly coordinating the post-election operations.
According to him, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) and Commissioner of Police (CP) were all on the ground to oversee the security arrangements.
“The DIG is coordinating the election on the ground. The AIG is on the ground. The CP is on the ground. So we are on full alert to ensure that nothing untoward happens as part of our post-election security plan,” Iniedu said.
Ahead of the governorship election, the police deployed more than 15,000 personnel and at least 30 Commissioners of Police to Osun State to provide security before, during and after the exercise.
A Deputy Inspector-General of Police was also deployed to coordinate the overall security operations for the election.
The latest measures come amid concerns over possible clashes and political tensions following the announcement of the election results, with the police warning residents and political actors against actions capable of disrupting public peace.
The Force said its continued presence across the state was aimed at maintaining law and order, protecting residents and preventing any attempt to exploit the post-election period to cause violence.
